Tisícky ľudí sa tu kúpali v rieke Paraná, kde sa chceli schladiť, pretože teploty dosahovali v Argentíne ohromných 40 stupňov.
Na pláži bolo aj 7-ročné dievčatko Rosa, ktoré stálo do pása vo vode a hralo sa ako zvyčajne. Náhle ju však čosi zabolelo na ľavom malíčku na ruke a zľakla sa.

Vtedy si návštevníci pláže uvedomili, že dievčatko bolo napadnuté obávanými piraňami.
Hoci plavčíci vyzývali ľudí, aby opustili vodu, len málokto ich poslúchol a výsledkom je 70 napadnutých ľudí, medzi ktorými bolo 20 detí.
Ryby ľuďom trhali mäso z rúk, prstov na nohách aj z členkov. Jeden z plavcov bol tak vážne zranený, že mu museli v nemocnici amputovať časť nohy.
